From the union of these two concepts came a legend in the form of Air Jordan in 1984. In 1985, the most famous basketball player in history was banned from wearing Jordan 1 shoes because they didn't meet the prescribed game dress code, according to the NBA . To make matters worse, he would have to pay a $5,000 fine for every game he wore them.

Rather than risk the recall of this Jordan sneaker, it was decided that the company would rather cash in any such fine to Michael just so he could wear the J's as they were.
